My good friend Gary Elrod told me about this song and after listening to it I believe that it gives us such an incredible insight to what was going on in Elvis's spirit during his last few years alive. 
Let me tell you what I have read and heard about how this song came to be. 
It was during Elvis' last tour in Las Vegas ( December 1976) that Elvis, while alone in his room wrote down on a piece of paper his inner thoughts of what was going on in his spirit.  It may indeed have been a letter he was writing, or maybe he felt he had found perfect lyrics to a song, but then for whatever reason
he crumpled up the paper and tossed it in the trash.
Rumor has it that either a maid or one of his body guards retrieved the note and eventually Wayne Newton purchased it at an auction.
Wayne Newton turned this note into a song and when you listen to this song pay close attention to when Wayne "talks".
Those are word for word the thoughts that Elvis had written down. 

After listening to this song I think I understand a little bit more about the turmoil that
Elvis
must have been going through.
